39 young men and women predominantly from Khekhethe Village in Ward 6 have registered to compete in the TiBaKalnga 10 K Run this year. The rest are from Gala, Kungubo and Luvuluma Villages. The athletes are vowing to break the 53minutes record in the men’s category and the 1hr 19 minutes set last year. This year’s disproportionately higher number of young women participants than men is putting a lot of pressure on Thubelihle Ncube who won last year with the time of 1hr and 19 minutes. In the men’s category, Vusumuzi Sibanda and Howard Shanga both of Gala Village are hoping to beat the time set by Nhlanhla Nkomo of Ntoli in the inaugural run last year. Nhlanhla will likely not run this year. Meanwhile efforts to secure sponsorship are still ongoing with several Harare based companies having expressed an interest.
“We are now finalising the sponsorship aspect of the competition,” said Mr Sibusiso Malunga the director of the 10K recently. The race will commence promptly at 7:00 am on July 8th at the Gampu shopping centre culminating in the finishing point at the TG Silundika Cultural Community Centre where the prize giving ceremony will be held. The Chairman of the Centre Mr Tsambani this week issued an appeal for donations in the form of food items to cater for a high turnout expected this year. The crowds will likely be much larger this year considering the concurrent preparations for and in anticipation of the TiBaKalanga Festival to be held on 22 & 23 July.
