Mrs Angelina Zikhali Ncube of Msinjwana Village in Ward 6, Bulilima District is working around the clock to make sure she has enough baskets to sell during the TiBaKalanga Festival scheduled for 22-23 July later this year. Mrs Ncube, along with other aspirant vendors hopes to make tens and even hundreds of different types of hand-made baskets that will be sold in stalls at the TG Silundika Cultural Community Centre.
Many villagers in this rural community will get a chance to sell their traditional crafts at the planned festival which is expected to attract anywhere between 1000- 2000 visitors from across Zimbabwe and the diaspora. Ward 6 residents participated in a two day international cultural marketing workshop last July facilitated by an American Fulbright scholar, Dr Gordon Bronitsky which ended in the adoption of the festival idea. It is expected to become an annual event that will attract domestic and international tourists and generate a new type of economic activity in the area. More than a dozen artists have expressed an interest in performing during the two day menu of activities which will feature Kalanga traditional dancing, a choral competition and a fashion show.
